Many Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications will be deployed in future cellular M2M networks, including smart metering, e-health care, public safety, surveillance, remote maintenance and control, etc. and the number of M2M devices will be expected to be tens of billions by 2020. In order to collect data from a significant number of M2M nodes, we may encounter a random access overload or congestion problem, including preamble collisions and resource collisions in the random access procedure. In this thesis, we propose two efficient group data collection mechanisms in both cases of a fixed amount of Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) resources and a variable amount of PUSCH resources in a future cellular M2M communication environment. The proposed scheme shows the effectiveness to efficiently adjust the access class barring factor, p by considering the available PUSCH resources. The performance evaluation results show higher resource efficiency and shorter data collection time, compared with the conventional access barring mechanism.
