A study on the wear mechanism of electrode tip and its effect on the resistance spot weld is presented. The electrode tip wear determines the contact state between electrode and weldment, especially the electrode contact area on which the electric heat generation in the weld depends.
Therefore, this thesis is focused on the examination of an enlargement or a reduction of electrode contact area due to the mushrooming or trimming in the tip edge. In experiment, the mild steel is used as a weldment, since it has been used widely in industry and we can observe the mushrooming very frequently during welding it.
Finally the effect of the mushrooming and trimming on the nugget size is investigated.
