Titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) has a great deal of advantages of abundance, high chemical stability, low cost, and wide bandgap energy (3.2 eV). For these properties, $TiO_2$ is applicable to a variety of research fields such as photocatalytic applications, solar cells, gas sensors, and super capacitors.
Photocatalytic applications of $TiO_2$ have received great attention due to its environmental friendliness and sustainable energy sources. In particular, waste water purification is one of the most important photocatalytic applications and a worldwide issue to be solved for now and the future.
In this study, vertically-aligned open both ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were used to maximize photocatalytic properties of $TiO_2$ because open both ended nanotube arrays have the remarkably large surface area and the flow-through structure for better applications. Furthermore, NiO nanoparticles were deposited on the open both ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays since NiO that is a p-type semiconductor makes a p-n junction with n-type $TiO_2$ which can improve charge-transfer efficiency and charge separation by internal electric field.
Open both ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were fabricated by low temperature voltage transitional two-step anodization. The effects of compositional variation of the electrolyte on the dimension of $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were analyzed, and the optimal composition of the electrolyte for the large diameter and the long length of $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays was obtained. NiO nanoparticles were deposited on the open both ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays by chemical bath deposition and chemical vacuum deposition. The depositional condition of chemical vacuum deposition was better than that of chemical bath deposition. The photocatalytic activity of NiO/open both ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays fabricated by chemical vacuum deposition was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB). The photocatalytic efficiency of NiO/open both ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays was higher than those of open both ended $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays and NiO/$TiO_2$ thin film.
