The dynamic model of automobile engines is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of a variable displacement engine.
Experimental works are performed with a Bongo in-line 4 cylinder diesel engine to confirm the validity of the model. The verified model is then used to check the convertibility of the Bongo engine to a variable displacement engine.
It is found that the proper selection of the cylinders not fired can be made on the basis of the engine vibration level and that the Bongo 4-3-2 variable displacement engine can be realized under, at least, almost no load condition.
