In order to transmit data in the rate exceeding the channel bandwidth, we may need the Partial Response Signaling (PRS) system which has an effect of spectral shaping. It is a multilevel transmission system that requires a good linearity in transmitter and receiver devices. This thesis is confined to a simple transmission system which consists of LED source, optical fiber channel and PIN diode detector. The performance of an optical communication system can be represented by the type of the pulse shaper in the transmitter and the pre-amp in the receiver. After defining the receiver sensitivity of ternary transmission systems-bipolar(BP), duobinary(DB), modified duobinary(MDB)-which are typical in PRS, firstly we compare the performance on the basis of the receiver sensitivity, respectively. Secondly, the performance of a binary transmission system is compared with that of a DB transmission system based on the receiver sensitivity. In this case, the rectangular or Gaussian pulse shaper is used in the transmitter, and the high impedance pre-amp or transimpedance pre-amp is used in the receiver. Thirdly, a DB transmission system is implemented and the performance is measured on bit error rate. In comparing the performance among the ternary transmission systems, we find that the difference of receiver sensitivities between DB and BP/MDB depends only on pulse shaping parameter. In the case of comparison between DB and binary transmission systems, the results show that DB transmission is much better than binary transmission, as the pulse shaping parameter becomes larger, which means that the repeater distance becomes longer.
