From the end of 1970s, the Local Area Network(LAN) has been considered as the new technology of computer networks. LANs are recently being installed in campus, offices, factories, and other areas. As users in LANs gradually want to communicate with others and use the resources located at remote network, the interconnection of LANs is reached to maturity. In this thesis, the structure of the interconnected LAN should be the hirarchical fashion". The hierarchy gives the economy of scale, the modularity, the large amount of resources to the lowest level machine/user, etc. We define the characteristics of Hierarchical LAN (HLAN) and classify the already existed LANs by hierarchy, which attempts to give the clear understanding of HLAN. Because the interprocess communication is not supported between processes residing on different networks, we propose the model which makes it possible: the Net IPC Server."
1970년대 말부터 근거리 지역내의 컴퓨터망 기술의 새로운 기수로 대두한 Local Area Network(LAN)은 많은 응용분야에 설치되어 운용되고 있다. 지역적으로 분산되어 있는 사용자 및 컴퓨터의 연결은 하나의 LAN으로는 불가능하고, 또한 이들 간의 정보교환 자원공유에 대한 요구가 급증하고 있기때문에 LAN간의 연결은 불가피해지고 있다.
본 논문에서는 LAN간의 연결 방법으로 그 구조의 형태를 계층적 으로 구성하는 Hierarchical LAN (HLAN)을 제시하고 있다. HLAN의 기본 목적은 사용자에게는 자원의 사용을 그 소재지에 관계없이 이용할 수 있는 환경을 제공하고, 구조적으로는 확장의 용이 및 modularity를 제공한다.
사용자에게 이러한 service를 제공하기 위해서는 Inter-Process Communication(IPC)가 제공되어야 하나 현재는 하나의 LAN에서만 용이하기때문에 HLAN과 같은 여러 개 LAN들의 연결체 속에서도 가능하도록 하는 model을 본 논문은 제시하고 있다. 이 model의 주요한 근저는 gateway의 역활을 종래의 packet의 전송자 혹은 protocol의 변환자와 같은 기능보다 더 high level인 자원 운영자의 기능을 수행하는 NetIpc Server이다.
이 Netlpc Server간의 network까지 구성하여 LAN의 연결체가 하나의 계층적 구조를 갖는 HLAN이 되어 사용자에게는 전체 컴퓨터 망이 자신이 소유한 하나의 컴퓨터처럼 보이도록 하는 것(Networking Computer)이 HLAN의 최종목표이다.
