Acidic properties of ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts were studied by temperature-programmed desorption technique and i.r. spectroscopy.
Full exchange could be obtained in alkali metal cation exchanges, but alkaline-and rare-earth metal cation exchanges could not be obtained over than 30-40%.
TPD pattern of HZSM-5 zeolite showed three different states, designated as α,β, and γ, respectively. The amount of γ-state decreased with increasing Si/Al ratio, and upon cation-exchanging with alkali metal. I.r. spectra of pyridine adsorbed on various modified ZSM-5 showed that γ-state is due to the hydroxyl groups of bridged Si - OH - Al.
Alkylation of toluene with ethanol over HZSM-5 and cation-exchanged as well as Mg-modified catalysts was investigated. It was shown that Bronsted acid site was an active site, and conversion was reduced drastically by alkali metal cation exchange.
Due to modified diffusional characteristics, high p-ethyl-toluene selectivity was observed over $K^+$, $Cs^+$-exchanged and Mg-modified HZSM-5 zeolite catalysts.
