Plane strain crack growth under small scale yielding conditions in elasto-perfectly plastic and linear hardening material respectively is investigated by finite element method.
Taking CTOA (crack tip opening angle) as a fracture parameter, its validity is examined by defining CTOA with different characteristic length, and J-Δa curve is obtained. The results show that the stress and crack opening displacement appeared to be in good agreement with those predicted by Rice. Also, fracture stress concept is investigated. The results suggest that in order to apply the concept of "fracture stress" to ductile material, the characteristic distance over which the fracture stress exceeds a critical value in order to propagate the crack should change as a function of K, contrary to the constant characteristic length (approximately equal to 1-2 grain diameter) as proposed by Ritchie et al for brittle material.
