RDSM (Relational Database System for Multi-user) is an experimental database management system for multi-user based on the relational data model to guarantee higher data independence and to provide easier user interface.
This thesis mainly studies the design and implementation of low-level interface of RDSM which consists of three-level interface: user interface, high-level interface, low-level interface. The low-level interface of RDSM is made up of concurrency control mechanism, system catalogs, and access method functions. Concurrency control mechanism uses physical locking method with file granularity and preclaim strategy. The system catalogs are dynamically updated by RDSM to contain a current description of all user relations, views, and access privileges. The access method functions actually access and change information in the database using VAX-11 RMS.
RDSM is implemented on the VAX/VMS which is the operating system of VAX-11 mini-computer at KAIST.
