A new monomer, N-vinyl-2,2-dimethyl-4-oxazolidone was synthesized by dehydration of N-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-4-oxazolidone, and was polymerized by free radical initiator in the conversion of 65%.
The inherent viscosity of this polymer was 0.0321 dl/g (0.5g in 100 ml benzene) and it is soluble in various organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform, methanol, ethanol, tetrachloromethane, but not in water. Also the complexation with iodine of this polymer was studied in 16% aq. ethanol solution with increasing the polymer concentrations. Being different from poly(vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), poly(N-vinyl-2,2-dimethyl-4-oxazolidone) failed to show any complexation with iodine.
