This study focuses on two objects.
First, it investigates the relationship with technology and organization structure, and the relationship with size and organization structure in Korean manufacturing firms.
Second, it investigates which variable of technology or size has predominant effect on the organization structure in Korean manufacturing firms.
Twelve hypotheses are delineated to the above objects.
Data were gathered from 28 manufacturing firms in Seoul through interviews, observations, and questionnaires.
The dimensions of organization structure-centralization and formalization-were measured by Hage & Aiken's multi-item scales. Before data analysis, item analysis and factor analysis were conducted for the check of the reliability and construct validity of Hage & Aiken's scales in Korean manufacturing firms.
Data were analyzed through correlation and regression analysis.
The results shows that size has a sufficient correlation with whole dimensions of organization structure-structural differentiation, administrative intensity, centralization, and formalization. On the other hand, technology has a poor correlation with dimensions of organization structure except centralization.
Regression analysis shows that in Korean manufacturing firms, size has more predominant effect than technology on the dimensions of organizations structure-structural differentiation, administrative intensity, formalization.
Only on the centralization dimension of organization structure, technology and size shows equivalent effects.
In conclusion, this study attempts to give a data-base for the study of the characteristics of organization structure in Korea.
