This thesis develops a framework for choosing modes of transportation (rail, highway, airfreight, etc.) by taking into account the conflicting objectives of minimizing total transportation costs and average shipment times in solid transportation problem where the kind of product sent form the factories to the markets is not single.
An efficient algorithm using the operator theory of parametric programming is presented for determining the paretooptimal or efficient curve. The algorithm also provides the optimal routes, modes of transportation and the corresponding shipping amounts for every efficient point.
To illustrate the algorithm, an example problem is solved to determine the efficient curve.
