Thermal cycling heat treatment is applied to A.I.S.I. 4340 steel for improving mechanical properties, especially fatigue crack propagation life. The effect of mean stress and tempering temperature on fatigue crack propagation life is also investigated. All fatigue data are analyzed employing Paris equation.
Experimental results show that thermal cycling heat treatment is very effective in improving yield stress, impact strength and fatigue crack propagation life.
