The effects of nickel and Tribaloy addition on the wear properties of the sintered compacts of powder mixture Al-4Cu-X ($Ni_{1-y}Tribaloy_y$) were investigated at various sliding speeds. Sintering was carried out at 600℃ for 30 min. in the nitrogen atmosphere.
Wear resistance of Al-4Cu-X ($Ni_{1-y}Tribaloy_y$) sintered compacts were very poor at a sliding speed of 0.8 m/s, but wear rate decreased with increasing sliding speed up to 4.2 m/s. These phenomena were due to change of wear mechanism. At a sliding speed of 5.3 m/s, seizure appeared in Al-4Cu-5Ni sintered compacts but didn't in Al-4Cu-5Tribaloy.
X-ray studies showed that intermetallic compounds formed during exothermic reaction with aluminum and nickel turned out to be $NiAl_3$ and $Ni_2Al_3$.
The addition of Tribaloy brought about a good wear resistance at high sliding speed because Tribaloy has good high temperature properties and high hardness.
