Fatigue properties of an ion-nitrided steel, under direct stress conditions, are investigated. S-N curves have been established, and it is found that there is a significant increase in fatigue strength in the high cycle region.
In the low cycle region, there results brittle fracture due to case hardening. But in the high cycle region, it is found that cracks propagate from the inclusions in the core. Therefore, the ion-nitriding causes a reduction in fatigue strength at low cycles and an improvement at high cycles.
Specimen nitrided for a long time, e.g., for 7 hours shows more increase in fatigue strength in the high cycle region than other specimens-nitrided for 1 hour or 2 hours.
The fractographs of the fracture surfaces taken by optical microscope and SEM (scanning electron microscope) show that cracks initiated from the non-metallic inclusions in the core propogate and lead to fracture in the high cycle region.
