White blood cells are automatically classified into four classes by microscope, TV camera, Z-2 Micro-computer and HP3000 Mini computer. Data transfers are studied by direct memory access and these schemes are implemented.
Feature extractors are implemented by Z-2 micro-computer and hardwired logic, and had the same results as software simulation.
Although only two features, namely nuclear size and perimeter, are implemented, the results indicate the possibility of further implementation of the other feature extractors.
In conclusion, this initial study showed the possibility of full automation of white blood cell differential counting system.
