Pulse dispersion is studied for the arbitrary index profile of the optical fiber.
The impulse response and bandwidth of optical fibers are obtained by numerical calculation, if sampled values of their refractive index are given.
Two typical cases concerning profile deformation, which is present in practical fibers, are treated thouroughly :
a) Central dip depression of the refractive index in the core.
b) Sinusoidal ripple imposed on the power law profile.
