The alumina-based pearlescent effect pigment is the one of the advanced inorganic nonmetallic pigments that uses alumina platelets with high aspect ratios as a substrate material. The color of the pearlescent effect pigment can be controlled by varying the thickness of the highly refractive metal oxide on the substrate. We successfully synthesized non-corrosive 2D α-alumina@TiO2 core-shell nanoplates that were metallic gold in color via sol-gel solution chemistry with controlled reaction conditions for the formation of anatase and rutile TiO2 nanocrystals. The rutile-phase TiO2 was formed under more acidic conditions, and the anatase-phase TiO2 was formed under less acidic conditions. This is because the [Ti(OH)mCln]2- (m + n = 6) intermediate complex tends to cause corner sharing under more acidic conditions because of the abundance of Cl- and yields edge sharing under less acidic conditions. The successful coating of a smooth TiO2 nanoshell on the 2D α-alumina nanoplates was associated with the fact that the rutile TiO2 nanocrystals were preferentially coated on the 2D α-alumina nanoplates and the smaller irregular sphere-shaped anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were co-formed on the surface of the α-alumina. We believe that this controlled reaction method to form a smooth inorganic TiO2 nanoshell is helpful to synthesize opalescent color pigments, angle-dependent structuring color pigments, safety pigments, and cosmetic pearls.
