The studies on the copolymerization of N-acryloyl pyrrolidone and methyl methacrylate and graft copolymerization of pyrrolidone onto polyacrylate backbone were carried out.
Monomer reactivity ratio values for N-acryloyl pyrrolidone - methyl methacrylate system were calculated by Fineman - Ross equation and Kelen - Tudos equation. It was found that the copolymer of N-acryloyl pyrrolidone and methyl methacrylate has randomly distributed acyl lactam function on the acrylate polymer backbone ($r_1$, $r_2$=0.97). It was also found that poly (N-acryloyl pyrrolidone-co-methyl methacrylate) was effective as a polymeric initiator of anionic polymerization of pyrrolidone. The maximum conversion, percent graft and viscosity were 61%, 2080% and 2.28 (dl/g), respectively.
In this paper, we discussed the effects of reaction time, polymeric initiator concentration, catalyst concentration and temperature on the conversion, percent graft and viscosity in graft copolymerization of pyrrolidone onto polyacrylate type backbone.
