The role of Cu(II)ion, in the hydrogenation reaction of thiophene aldehyde over Cu(II)-containing zeolites Y, has been studied.
Methyl thiophene and thiophene alcohol were the major products of the reaction over CuPdY. But PdY gave the decarbonylated product as was the case of furfural hydrogenation over $Pd-Al_2O_3$. So the Cu(II)-ion can be regarded to play an important role as one of active species for the selective formation of methyl thiophene and thiophene alcohol in the hydrogenation reaction of thiophene aldehyde over CuPdY.
Methyl thiophene was the major product, however, over both CuNiY and NiY. And no significant change occurred on the distribution of the products. So this result can be interpreted that the thiophene aldehyde interacts with the metallic Ni, instead of Cu(II), contrary to the case of furfural.
