In this research, I describe new affective and cognitive dimension focused on the abstract movements, which are modified within underlying frameworks for experiment to be combined between five basic modern dance techniques and LMA features, such as the time (sudden - sustained), space (direct - in- direct), and weight (strong - light). Furthermore, subjects’ emotional responses based on the time- series Martha Graham’s actual works are analyzed to verify the correlations between frameworks.
This experiment indicated that features could correlate different specific emotion; analyses of these data revealed that action drive of LMA conveyed particular adjectives respectively. Therefore, I con- clude that subjects focus on the features of movements, such as the duration when moving, the size of overall body movements, and the tendency toward undulating body movements, not merely on the type of the movements, especially with regard to abstract movements. Movements with positive - ac- tive was statistically significant values on sudden and strong features; while negative with inactive movements were statistically significant values on sustained and light. When subjects investigate the internal meanings on abstract movements, indirect features on space were crucial point to analyze.
Although emotional response to dance varies according to the type of movements, or intention to choreograph them, this study can provide evidence that there is a relationship between new affective and cognitive dimension and artistic movements. The type of artistic movements, such as ballet or modern dance, is not important to affect audiences’ affection, but duration, speed, velocity, size, or level of body position have a capability to induce an impression.
이 논문은 무용 움직임과 관련된 정서적, 인지적 차원의 감정 부류를 제안한다. 실험을 위해 사용한 무용 움직임은 미국의 유명한 현대 무용가가 만든 5가지 기본 테크닉과 LMA 이론에 근거하여 조합한 결과물이며, 동시에 피실험자에게 제시한 정서는 무용 예술과 관련된 감정을, 기존의 폴 에크만(Paul Ekman)에 의해 밝혀진 기본 감정 외 16가지 감정 형용사를 더 제시함으로써 현대무용 움직임의 특징과 관련된 새로운 정서 및 인지 차원을 제안하고자 하였다. 이는 피실험자들이 움직임을 보고 느낀 주된 감정이 무엇인지를 알아내고, 특정 정서-인지와 관련있는 움직임 특징이 무엇인지를 파악하기 위함이다.
현대무용 움직임의 특징과 관련된 정서 및 인지 차원 연구는 기존 무용 예술 장르가 가지는 단점, 즉 추상 표현 방법으로인한 관객과의 소통 부제를 경감하고자 시도한 연구다. 이런 시도는 안무가나 무용가가 관객에게 보다 직관적 표현이 가능하도록 도울 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 기본적으로 관객은 동작이 움직이는 지속 시간, 신체가 공간을 점유하는 정도, 그리고 몸이 움직이는 흐름에 크게 집중하여 동작을 파악하는 것으로 나타났다. 각 감정과 상관관계있는 동작 특징은, 부정적 감정은 Weight(strong)에 크게 영향받으며, 긍정적 감정은 Time(sudden)에, 활동적인 혹은 활기찬 분위기의 움직임은 Time(sudden)과 Weight(strong)에 모두 영향을 받는다. 테크닉컬한 동작은 Time(sudden)에 크게 영향받는다. 크리에이티브한 동작 또한 Time(sudden)이 강한 특징으로 나타났다. 동작의 내적 측면, 숨은 의미를 표현한 동작은 Time 뿐 만 아니라 Space(indirect)한 동작 특징에 크게 영향을 받는다.
비록 감정은, 그 중에서도 예술 감상은, 작품을 만든 작가의 의도와 표현 방법에 크게 영향을 받지만, 실험을 통해 밝혀진 감정과 상관관계가 있는 움직임의 특징에 집중하여 안무를 한다면 공통적으로 지니고 있는 기본적 특성에 근거하여 표현할 수 있다고 사료된다. 움직임 그 자체에 집중한 특징을 파악해내고, 이런 관점에서 감정이 서로 차이가 있음에도 불구하고 공통감이 있다는 것을 증명하는데 토대가 될 수 있을 것이다.
