This thesis is started with the necessity of mediating teens’ problematic smartphone use; exposure to harmful content, excessive use, and bad effects on daily lives, etc. On this matter, parent’s role is understood to be essential. However, as smartphones have recently become pervasive among adolescents, the scope and depth of existing studies lack in providing thorough explanation surrounding overall context in mediating teen’s smartphone use. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to understand the overall context surrounding parental approach mediating teens’ problematic smartphone use in terms of mediating rules, by adapting different perspective of understanding context; context as an interaction problem. To understand parental mediating approaches, we surveyed on existing mediating rules in home from 124 parents, and conducted in-depth interviews from 18 parents. From these survey and interview results, we drew some meaningful findings. First, there exist a various range of mediating rules. Many of parents set up rules according to various contextual factors such as type of activities, time, place, and the other things. Moreover, the way they enforce the rules were various as well; some of them withdraw children’s phone for a while, keep the phone in the public space at home, or make the network not available, etc. The overall context surrounding the mediating action was more various and complex; (1) daily lives are so dynamic that enforcement of the rules often became useless, (2) maintaining collocation with children in near distance was really important, (3) family members had effect on children’s smartphone use, (4) the degree of teens’ obsession with smartphone make the enforcement really hard. On these parental approaches, children were said to react in three ways; breaking the rules, delay of keeping the rules, bending the rules. From these findings, we suggest a context-aware rule making system. To effectively mediate the children’s smartphone use, the system can help set up rules flexibly according to the surrounding context and suggest appropriate rules. Furthermore, the system utilizes the influence of social context by including family members into mediating context.
청소년 사이에서 스마트폰 보급이 일반화됨에 따라 문제적 사용의 문제도 함께 대두되고 있다. 스마트폰 중독, 유해매체 접촉, 사이버 왕따 등 스마트폰으로 인한 청소년 사이에서의 문제들이 발견되고 있다. 이런 청소년의 미디어 사용에 있어서 부모가 하는 역할은 매우 중요한 것으로 이해되고 있다. 따라서 청소년의 스마트폰 사용에 관한 부모의 중재접근에 대한 연구들이 최근 몇년 사이에 진행되어 왔다. 하지만 이동성 및 개인성등 새로운 미디어적 특징을 갖고 있는 스마트폰의 속성상 기존의 연구들로는 관련정황을 충분히 이해할 수 없는 한계가 있었다. 따라서 본 연구는 청소년의 문제적 스마트폰 사용에 대한 부모의 중재접근을 이해하고 나아가 새로운 기제를 제시하기 위해 상호작용으로써의 컨텍스트적 관점으로 중재상황을 새롭게 조망하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 설문과 인터뷰를 통하여 가정 내에서 행해지는 중재규칙과 중재적용과정에서의 컨텍스트 요소, 자녀들의 반응을 조사할 수 있었다. 우리의 연구결과 중재규칙은 컨텍스트 요소인 활동, 시간, 장소들에 따라 지시, 압수, 보관 등의 다양한 방법이 사용되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 중재적용 과정에서는 일상의 역동성, 부모-자녀간 물리적 거리, 가족구성원의 스마트폰 사용자극, 자녀의 사용몰입 및 사용 목적에 따른 중재의 차이가 중재적용과정에 영향을 미치는 것을 발견했다. 이를 토대로 우리는 일상의 역동성과 스마트폰의 개인화성 및 이동성, 가정 및 사회적 환경의 영향을 고려한 상황적응적 중재시스템을 제안한다. 이를 통하여 상황적응적인 중재규칙 생성과 추천, 또 상호협력적인 중재 플랫폼의 개념을 제공하여 궁극적으로 청소년의 건강한 사용을 돕고 문제적 사용을 완화하고자 한다.
