ARAIM (Advanced Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitor) is one of the most promising future ar-chitectures to support world-wide vertical guidance of aircraft using multi-constellations and new civil signals. Signal-In-Space (SIS) range error, which consists of satellite ephemeris and clock errors, is considered to be the most significant among Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) error sources, because combinations of signals on dual frequencies enable the ionospheric errors to be removed. SIS error will be a dominant error source and greatly affect ARAIM performance and availability.
ARAIM will leverage multi-constellations of various nations, which are GPS (Global Positioning Sys-tem), GLONASS, GALILEO, and COMPASS, so that statistical analysis on SIS error of those constellations should be conducted. Since each satellite constellation conveys the navigation message with different struc-ture, SIS error of each constellation is estimated properly with particular approach. In this paper, SIS errors in GPS, and GLONASS are characterized with specific method. To analyze SIS error characteristics, large amounts of satellite ephemeris and clock data are processed.
In ARAIM architecture, an integrity parameter α is proposed to be broadcast by air navigation service providers to ensure the integrity of the system. α is an inflation factor which is applied to broadcast standard deviation (URA) of SIS error distribution in order to satisfy Gaussian assumption. Since the probabilistic dis-tribution of SIS error follows not Gaussian distribution, but heavy-tailed distribution, URA multiplied with α finally “overbounds” the sample distribution of SIS error. In this paper, it is aimed to compute α properly (safe but not conservative) with well-modeled SIS error characteristics. Furthermore, to lower the conserva-tism of the system performance, sub-division technique is devised to calculate separate α.
In this paper, ARAIM availability simulations are conducted to evaluate the future performance of ARAIM for various scenarios. The simulation results demonstrated that the performance improvements from applying separate α for individual satellite rather than single value of α for all satellites. In particular, applying one value of α for each satellite gave significantly higher availability than other scenarios. This benefit gets more evident when the Gaussian tail behaviors of SIS error distribution differ across the satellites.
