The need for dissolved oxygen (DO) removal from water in food, power plant, semiconductor manufacture, pharmaceutical and biotechnology processes triggered the study on the hydrophobic superparamagnetic polymeric membrane. Taking an advantage of paramagnetic properties, the oxygen molecules are expected to have higher transport through magnetic membrane.
The thesis consists of two parts. First study was conducted in order to determine the effect of superparamagnetic particles addition to poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) flat sheet membrane morphologies and the effect of membrane magnetic property to DO removal process. The preparation of superparamagnetic PVDF membranes was done using two different methods: coating and incorporation of particles into polymer matrix. The results show that the addition of particles changes morphologies of membranes by increasing pore size and porosity. Additionally, the presence of magnetic field increases the oxygen mass transfer coefficient through the superparamagnetic membranes about 19% for superparamagnetic particle-incorporated membrane and 32% for superparamagnetic particle coated-membrane in average.
The second study was conducted to determine the relation between membrane operational conditions and DO removal process of superparamagnetic membrane as the contribution of magnetic field to oxygen mass transfer might be different depends on operational conditions. The superparamagnetic particle-coated poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) hollow fibers module with total surface area of 208 cm2 was prepared and tested at different feed water flow rates, feed water salinity and vacuum pressures. Different from PVDF membrane, it has been demonstrated that the particles coating has no significant influence on PTFE hollow fibers pore size and porosity. The dissolved oxygen removal both from water and seawater through the superparamagnetic PTFE hollow fiber membrane increases under the external magnetic field of 100 Gauss. The optimum DO removal with magnetic PTFE hollow fiber membrane was found out to be at water flow rate of 12.5 cm3/s and vacuum pressure of 6.67 x 105 dyn/cm2.
