The objectives of this investigation is to reduce the chatter by controlling the tool-workpiece relative displacement.
Machine tool chatter is an important limiting factor of production rate and surface quality in metal cutting. The occurrence of chatter is characterized by a self-excited, large amplitude of vibration, and is due primarily to time delay associated with the rotation of the workpiece or cutter.
An electro-hydraulic servo actuator which provides the control force to the tool - workpiece system, is developed here. The dynamic characteristics of the actuator is analyzed experimently and is compensated to have higher cut-off frequency.
Before the development of new chatter algorithm, the chatter suppression effect of the active chatter control system is recognized by metal cutting test using tool-workpiece relative motion as a feedback signal to hydraulic actuator which continuously positions cutting tool. Here, we know that active chatter control system has a good chatter suppression effect comparative to conventional cutting.
And, a new algorithm which removes regenerative effects in chatter loop is proposed and the digital computer simulation shows the possibility of it's realization to real metal cutting system.
