Reaction-bonded silicon nitride is a promising material for applications in high temperature material. However, a problem associated with current fabrication is that the reaction kinetics for such nitridation are extremely difficult to control.
The influence of nitridation conditions, especially the different nitrogen gas state, and the effect of $Fe_2O_3$ as an additive in high purity silicon powder compact to the formation of reaction-bonded silicon nitride were investigated.
Reaction-bonded silicon nitride was formed by heating silicon powder compacts in a nitrogen atmosphere to temperature in the range of 1300 to 1380℃ for several hours.
It was shown that the increase of reaction temperature parabolically raised the rate of reaction. It was also noted that the experiment under "Static" nitrogen condition enhanced the nitridation.
Experimental evidence indicated that the addition of $Fe_2O_3$ to silicon less than one weight percent significantly promoted the reaction by effective removing the protective silica film on silicon powder.
The ratio of α-$Si_3N_4$ to β-$Si_3N_4$ formed during nitridation was decreased with the increase of reaction temperature. Micrographical evidence of α and β silicon nitrides were also discussed.
