The effects of sulfur on the secondary recrystallization in 3% Si-Iron with manganese and boron were investigated by the final high cold reduction (78%) and the texture annealing. The composition of manganese and sulfur was 0.03 - 0.04%, 0.013 - 0.059% respectively, and the amount of boron added was 10 - 25 ppm. Dry $H_2$ and $N_2$ gases were used in texture annealing atmosphere.
Normal grain growth or incomplete secondary recrystallization was observed when the ratio of weight percent of manganese to that of sulfur is larger than 1.7, whereas secondary recrystallization was observed when that ratio is less than 1.7. It was also observed that the secondary recrystallization started from the surface of the strip.
These results indicate that Secondary Recrystallization may occur due to the inhibition of primary grain growth by solute sulfur rather than by the MnS ppt.
