A mathematical approach using the simple beam bending theory to study the mechanics of a plated transverse fracture is described. For the analytical modeling bone is assumed to be a cylindrical hollow beam on which an onlay plate is fixed by bone screws.
A system of simultaneous equations are derived for the deflection of bone and plate. The length of moment arm in the fracture surface which is related with the contact area is defined as the figure of merit for the bone-plate-screw system. The tendency of variations of the contact area due to change of design factors such as length, width and thickness of the plate, position of the screw hole, and force exerted on the screw are investigated. An optimal design problem is formulated to determine these parameters for a given fractured bone and the results are presented.
Bone-Plate-Screw system
