An expandable, microprocessor-based vehicle operator information system (KAIS' TRIP COMPUTER) is developed.
The Trip Computer can be considered to have four main parts: the function select keyboard, the central processing units, the displays -speedometer, fuel, coolant temperature, battery charging, and trip data-, and the interconnection wiring. The CPU translates the various engine and vehicle sensor inputs into the appropriate information desired by driver, as well as furnishing constant speed, fuel, coolant temperature, and battery voltage displays, and self-diagnostic features. In addition, the RAM have the capability of retaining trip data when the car is not running and during engine cranking.
Although the system developed is lack of reliability under the automotive environment, a microprocessor-based information system for the vehicle operator appears to be an attractive stepping stone to future applications.
(1) Function Select Keyboard
(2) Central Processing Unit
Trip Data Display
Special Wiring
