The elemental sulfur recovery from the thermal decomposition of pyrite and the aqueous oxidation of pyrrhotite were studied in a batch and fluidized bed systems.
In thermal decomposition reaction, the effects of temperature, reaction time and particle sizes on the rate of reaction conversion were determined. In addition, the effects of temperature, pressure, reaction time, agitation velocity and particle sizes on sulfur recovery were examined.
The optimum reaction conditions for thermal decomposition and aqueous oxidation processes are given as :
Thermal decomposition process :
Temperature : 700-750℃
Time : 30 miniutes
Particle size : 100%-80 mesh
Aqueous oxidation process :
Temperature : 110℃
O_2 Partial pressure : 150 psig
Reaction time : 90 minutes
pH : 1 -1.5
In the latter reaction, the more intense agitation and smaller particles produced higher conversion, however, they should be compromised between conversion and economic aspects.
On the basis of the present data, elemental sulfur and iron oxide for the feed of blast furnace can be obtained from domestic sulfide ores in the presented reaction processes.
Aqueous
150 psig
