Light scattering studies on the soft mode of the hydrogen bonded crystals, $KH_2PO_4$ and its isomorphous, have drawn a great attention for over ten years. But the temperature dependence of the overdamped soft mode, observed in the low frequency Raman spectra, is still controversial and different results were reported by various authors according to their methods of analysis.
The first Raman spectra of the soft mode was fitted by a simple damped harmonic oscillator model. Various authors later overserved that $B_2$ optic phonon was coupled to the proton tunneling mode at low frequency and fitted their Raman spectra to the coupled oscillator model, but conflicting results have been reported as to whether the coupling between the overdamped proton mode and the $B_2$ optic mode is real and imaginary.
In this thesis, various experimental data from Raman and Brillouin spectra are critically reviewed. Practical limits and some equivalence of various theories in certain approximations are considered.
And difficulties in applying current theories to the spectroscopic data are carefully discussed and soft mode problems which remain unsolved are clearly defined.
