Finite element method is used to investigate vortex motion of steady, incompressible, viscous flow induced by rotating V-grooved cylinder in a hollow cylinder for different geometries at several Reynolds numbers. Adopting Galerkin's procedure, both cubic and linear variation interpolation functions are used as element shape functions.
At small Reynolds numbers the time-dependent method is used, while both Newton-Raphson method and perturbation method are used at large Reynolds numbers considering the significant effects of non-linear terms due to abrupt variation of field variable such as stream function, vorticity and circulation.
It is found that the finite element solution satisfactorily converges at small Reynolds numbers, but the solution tends to be inaccurate and osillatory at large Reynolds numbers.
It is shown that the vortex strength tends to increase as Reynolds number, and that streamlines are confined in the region close to the V-grooved wall at low Reynolds numbers.
An experiment for flow visualization is also made to confirm the theoretical results.
