Combustion factors from fuel injection system of a Diesel engine are injection rate, duration and injection pressure. Among these parameters, injection pressure plays a role to atomize and distribute fuel into the combustion chamber. Unburned carbon and smoke of Diesel engine emission may chiefly come from incomplete combustion due to injection under low pressure. Therefore, Diesel engine emission may be reduced by modifying the design of fuel injection system so that the low pressure injection could be repressed.
Central idea of this study is to sustitute nonlinear springs for conventional linear nozzle spring to raise the average injection pressure. Nonlinear nozzle springs studied in this thesis are either magnet coupled or two linear springs combined in a row.
For simulation purpose, the effective flow area and thrust coefficient of delivery valve, and those of needle valves for both hole and pintle type nozzle are measured experimentally.
It is shown by digital computer simulation that these nonlinear springs in fact cause to raise the average injection pressure and to suppress low pressure injection. It is also shown that, in order to obtain better injection condition, the mass of needle valve should be designed as light as possible, and that the maximum lift of needle valve should be limited to flow saturation lift.
