The excited singlet state acidities of m-and p-substituted benzoic acids are measured from the UV absorption and fluorescence spectra, utilizing the Forster cycle calculation and by the fluorescence titration method. Acidities calculated by the two methods are not consistent with each other and most of the fluoroscence titration curves are similar to those of ground states. But acidities from the Forster cycle calculations give excited state acidities which are larger than the corresponding ground state acidities, verifying the general tendency that the electron-withdrawing acid functional groups such as carboxyl group exhibit excited state acidities larger than the corresponding ground state acidities.
The excited state acidities are plotted against the substituent constants. The resulting Hammett plot gives the reaction constant of 4.3, indicating the greater susceptibility of the dissociation at the excited states than at the ground states.
