A new approach for the analysis of hot rolling is proposed using hydrodynamic theory. Working material is considered as a viscous fluid at the elevated temperature in hot forming. In this study, the material moving through the roll gap is assumed to be a power-law fluid.
Two-dimensional equations of lubrication are derived from equation of motion, constitutive equation by perturbation approach. Then, the distributions of velocity and pressure are computed from the derived equations. Force, moment and power required in hot rolling are thus obtained. The theoretical computations are compared with the reported experimental results. It is found that the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results and the assumed model is acceptable for the engineering purpose.
