The method of establishing stable glow ion nitriding is studied by examining the behavior of low carbon steel(SCM 3) with respect to the hardness level and depth. A major difficulty of the ion nitriding is getting a stable glow establishment. As the work piece is heated by means of ion current in the vacuum, the contaminants on the surface may be released into the glow where they are ionized and locally creats a very high current density tube which appears as an intense are discharge.
The attention of this study is to prevent an are from forming and thus to establish a stable glow. It is found that the arc could completely be prevented when the D.C. high voltage is converted into a square wave and then imposed to the electrodes(workpiece and chamber). The frequency of the square wave is shown to be not critical for establishment of a stable glow over the test range 200Hz to 2000Hz.
The optimal conditions of ion nitriding such as chamber pressure, work piece temperature, and gas composition are examined testing the hardness level and depth of the nitrided work pieces.
The theory of ion nitriding is reviewed and advantages of the method of ion nitriding over the conventional gas and salt-bathe method are discussed.
