In the present research, the graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile to polyvinyl alcohol was investigated.
Acrylonitrile was grafted in aqueous media to polyvinyl alcohol by potassium persulfate(KPS) as an initiator. As the polymerization proceeded, the graft copolymer precipitated.
As the polyvinyl alcohol concentration in polymerization feed increased, the precipitation rate retarded and a fine copolymer suspension was obtained. The retardation was interpreted to be due to oxidation degradation of polyvinyl alcohol by persulfate and the suspension was resulted for the confined properties of hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol with hydrophobic polyacrylonitrile. Addition of sodium allyl sulfonate to the polymerization resulted in decreasing copolymer yield but increasing molecular weight.
In general all the graft copolymer were soulble in conc. nitric acid and in hot DMF. Polyacrylonitrile grafted to polyvinyl alcohol exhibited increased moisture regains. Graft copolymer containing 6.8% polyvinyl alcohol regained moisture 8.8% at 95% relative humidity and showed better thermal stability on thermogravimetric analysis.
