The dechlorination reaction between $CF_2clCFcl_2$ and Zn was investigated with methyl alcohol as a solvent.
The purpose of this experiment was to obtain kinetic information which can be used in designing industrial scale plant. The product, $CF_2CFcl$, of this reaction is the monomer of fluoropolymer. Kel-F and the intermediate of the anesthetic, Halothane.
Experiments were carried out in a batch reactor with four variables; concentration of $CF_2clCFcl_2$, Zn surface area, reaction temperature and agitator speed.
As a result of this experiment, reaction order was found to be first order with respect to concentration of $CF_2clCFcl_2$ and Zn surface area, while the activation energy was 15.3 ± 0.9Kcal/ g-mole.
In the range of Reynolds no. below 19500, the mass transfer effect was significant and with temperature rise, the effect increased.
