An experimental study was carried out to find criteria for the incipient occurrence of melt fracture in capillary extrusion of polypropylene melt. For the study, polymer melt flow rate was varied and pressures at the capillary wall were measured for dies with different capillary length-to-diameter ratios. End correction factors were found employing both the Bagley method and the modified method suggested by Han. The resulting data are presented in the form of true flow curves, true pressure profiles, entrance pressure drop vs. shear rate curve, exit pressure vs. shear rate curve, exit pressure vs. shear stress curve and recoverable shear strain vs. shear stress curve.
It was found that both the entrance pressure drop and the recoverable shear strain at the die exit increased sharply at the incipient point of visible melt fracture. This suggests that both of them are acceptable measures in representing the incipient occurrence of melt fracture at the critical shear rate in extrusion.
