The catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide was studied on a illuminated as well as dark zinc oxide surface at 150 ℃ and 350 ℃ respectively.
The rate of formation of $CO_2$ on the dark surface was found to be zero order with respect to oxygen and first order with respect to carbon monoxide. On the illuminated surface, however, the rate was found to be dependent on the oxygen pressure.
The electric conductivities and relaxation times of photogenerated carries of the catalyst were measured. The results suggest that the photogenerated electrons and holes are responsible for the enhancements of the adsorption of oxygen and desorption of carbon dioxide respectively.
The considerable decrease in catalytic activity during the photocatalytic reaction was observed. This decrease in activity may be attributed to the decrease in the concentration of interstitial zinc which act as a donor.
