Nanocatalysts, well-defined nanoscale heterogeneous catalysts, have emerged as a new
class of catalysts, of which reactivity and selectivity can be rationally controlled by their size, shape, and composition. Recently, Toste and Somojai have reported highly active heterogeneous metal nanoparticles for homogeneous electrophilic reactions through the design and synthesis of electrophilic metal surfaces. In their studies, Pt (II) or Pt (IV) species were identified and proposed for the catalytic activity. Although the catalytic activity of Pd nanoparticles was reported in Pd40/SBA-15, it is still questionable to suggest the existence of Pd (IV) species on the surface because they are considered to be transient intermediates in homogeneous catalysis. In this thesis, according to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, we show that the oxidation states of Pd surfaces can be modulated by the choice of oxidizing agents. Pd (II) and Pd (IV) species were mainly generated by the oxidation with PhI(OAc)2 and PhICl2, respectively. Our experiments suggest that Pd (IV) species on the surface of Pd nanoparticles are the active Lewis-acid
catalysts for hydroalkoxylation reactions. Moreover, surfactant-free Pd@SiO2 yolk-shell nanocatalysts are shown to have a significant catalytic activity even at ambient temperature.
