Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) have become crucial in aiding offshore oil and gas industries as water depths have increased beyond practical diving depths and harsh environments have become increasingly standard. ROV tasks usually include underwater surveying, inspection and installation support. Because the effectiveness of underwater intervention missions performed by ROVs are highly dependent on the operator`s skills and experience in terms of accuracy, reliability and operation time, there is need for improving the vehicle`s autonomy. One of the most challenging issues for autonomous underwater intervention is the localization of underwater vehicles in the underwater surrounding environment. This study verifies experimental feasibility of autonomous underwater intervention using vision-based localization. A 3-D CAD model-based tracking algorithm is introduced for localization and navigation then its performance is experimentally examined. Local statistics in grey-scale image is combined with the tracking algorithm for robust tracking, and underwater image is enhanced by using Bilateral filtering. Experiments were performed in a water tank using an underwater robot.
