Recently, wearable devices such as smart watch, smart glasses, and sport-band have been attracting much attention as next-generation devices. Wearable devices are worthy of notice because of their potential to im-prove human convenience. In particular, wearable displays are considered as important next-generation technology in the way that such devices express the visual information to our eyes. Thus, many research groups have studied wearable OLED devices that are the form of soft electronics. And, one of the research group has reported wearable OLED device that has high efficiency and high bending stability using evapora-tion process. However, evaporation process has several problems that limits both the device size and availa-ble materials, and the entire process time is long.
To solve and improve the above limitations, this paper focused on the realization of textile-based weara-ble polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) using simple solution process. PLED devices were fabricated by spin coating process which is widely used solution process. Firstly, aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) multilayers were fabricated on the bare textile as the planarization layer and water preventing layer. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene):poly(4-styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS, Clevios PH 1000), one of the widely used conductive polymer was used as the anode layer and phenyl-substituted poly(para-phenylenevinylene) (Superyellow, PDY-132) was used as the light-emitting layer. The fabricated bottom-emitting PLEDs showed high luminance over 10,000 cd/m2 and the maximum efficacy and power efficiency of 9.72 cd/A and 7.17 lm/W, respectively, was achieved. Also, there was less color shift in the textile PLED devices.
Textile-based top-emitting PLEDs were also studied in this paper. Thin silver layer with Alq3 capping layer was used as transparent cathode layer. Furthermore, the Fabry-Perot micro-cavity effect was used to improve device efficiency. The micro-cavity structure was designed between thick Ag reflector into the Al2O3 and PVA multilayers and thin film metal cathode. The fabricated device showed shifted emission spectrum and en-hanced color-purity.
We proposed an unprecedented wearable display that uses simple solution process and demonstrated the feasibility of realization of next-generation wearable display.
