Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are one of the most promising candidates for the future display and lighting applications. OLEDs have many advantages over conventional light sources, but their mechanical flexibility is regarded as the core ability that differentiate them from other competitors. Unfortunately, the flexibility of conventional transparent electrodes typically limits that of the whole devices, hindering OLEDs from showing their full potential in applications requiring extreme flexibility such as folding. However, highly flexible OLEDs can still be made with conventional oxide-based transparent electrodes (TEs) provided that the thickness of substrates is maintained to be thin enough to keep mechanical stress sufficiently low. In this work, ultra flexible and highly efficient OLEDs is demonstrated on the 6μm Mylar polymer film by using conventional transparent conducting oxide electrodes. The maximum strain is first identified that can be tolerated by TEs based on indium zinc oxide (IZO), the base thickness of which is determined by the optical optimization for high-performance operation. Then, the minimum bending radius achievable is estimated for a substrate with such IZO electrodes as a function of substrate thickness. With this optimization process, we demonstrate highly flexible, high-performance OLEDs that show external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 21 % and exhibit virtually no changes in the luminescence and electrical characteristics after 1,000 bending even at the bending radius as small as 300 μm.
