Plasma thermal performance of multilayer PVD coatings of tungsten and molybdenum on graphite substrate was studied for the application of ITER first wall tiles. The coatings with a total thickness of 5 μm and different numbers and ratio of W/Mo layer were prepared and plasma thermal loads of 1.3 to 4.1 MW/m2 were loaded to each type of coatings. Scratch test was then conducted to quantify the changes in adhesion. The microstructure analysis and scratch test results showed that the thermal performance of the coatings varied depending on the degree of heat loads and coating structure. Meanwhile, the benefit of multilayer coating over monolayer was evident in terms of plasma thermal resistance and adhesion. ANSYS 3D thermal-structural coupled analysis supported the empirical observation in which the role of the thickness dependency of W/Mo ratio was found.
