This research models the dynamics of consumer’s purchase behavior using the hidden Markov model. Our proposed model captures the latent states inside consumer that affect the final decision making. These latent states are subject to the dynamics so that customers could freely make the transition across the states. In order to explain what factors are affecting those transitions, we incorporate the demographic variables of customers as well as variables related to the product or service experience. Calibration of our model is based solely on the purchase transaction data so estimation is possible even with the modest data set. Especially in the context of relationship and booking among a travel agency and the customers, we could understand the travel destination region choice probability of the latent states through this work. It is also possible to understand the inconsistencies that the travelers showed in their purchase history by understanding the structure of dynamics of the latent state sequence throughout the transaction period. The HMM model has better description of the calibration data than the logistic regression as well as the better predictive ability. Although some parameter estimation about the impact of variables showed limitation of the HMM model in this context, more sophisticated variable selection and sampling could resolve the issues. Finally, the meaning of this research could be found not only from the introduction of new modeling technique on tourism management field but also from the introduction of original travel agency data hardly employed in previous marketing modeling studies.
