The mobile application market has been rapidly growing since the market emerged in 2008. Within the market, game applications constitute the largest portion in terms of sales. A notable selling mechanism amongst the game application sellers is that they provide games for free while making most of the profit from in-app purchases. Another notable observation is that the sellers often induce customers to make in-app purchases by letting the qualities of goods be decided by probability. This paper studies an optimal selling mechanism when a monopolist sells a probabilistic good with an uncertain quality. I find that the probability of the product being of high quality affects the seller’s profit. The seller’s profit increases in the probability of the product being a high quality product when the seller reveals the probability. On the other hand, the seller’s profit decreases in the probability of the product being of high quality when the seller doesn’t reveal the probability. Given the opposing results, I provide specific conditions under which the seller’s profit is better off when the seller doesn’t reveal the information.
모바일 애플리케이션 시장은 2008년부터 급속한 성장을 해왔다. 게임 애플리케이션은 시장 내 판매량에서 가장 큰 부분을 차지하고 있다. 주목할만한 점은 게임 애플리케이션을 제공하는 판매자는 게임은 무료로 제공하고 인 앱 구매를 통해 이윤을 만든다는 점이다. 또 다른 점은 소비자들에게 제공하는 재화의 품질이 확률적으로 정해진다는 점이다. 이 논문은 독점 판매자가 확률적인 재화를 판매하는 경우의 최적 판매 매커니즘을 연구해보았다. 좋은 품질의 제품이 나올 확률은 판매자의 이윤에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 정보를 공개하지 않는 경우에는 확률이 낮을수록 판매자의 이윤이 높아지는 한편, 정보를 공개하는 경우에는 확률이 낮을수록 판매자의 이윤도 낮아졌다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 판매자가 정보를 공개하지 않는 조건을 밝혀보려 한다.
