This paper examine whether financial market development promotes the renewable energy sector by reducing external financing costs. We use a cross-technology cross-country panel data for the period 2000-2013 to argue the relationship between financial development and renewable technology growth. Our paper is based on the economic mechanism that well-functioning financial market overcoming adverse selections and moral hazard reduce external financing costs of renewable energies. The main finding of this paper is that renewable technologies that are relatively more depend on external financing develop disproportionately faster in countries with developed financial markets. For example, solar photovoltaic which is the most external financing dependent technology develop disproportionately faster in developed financial markets. Whereas earlier studies mainly focus on the relationship between finance and manufacturing industry growth, this paper provides new insights through identifying relation between finance and sustainable energy sector growth.
본 논문은 금융 시장의 발전이 재생에너지 확산에 미치는 영향을 실증 분석한 논문이다. 본 연구에서는, 선진화된 금융 시장이 외부자금 조달 비용을 낮추어 줌으로써, 재생에너지 확산을 촉진 시킬 것이라는 가설을 검증하고자 하였다. 특히, 선진화된 금융 시장이 역선택 문제와 도덕적 해이 문제를 개선시키므로 외부자금 조달 비용을 낮출 것이라 사료되었다. 2000년부터 2013년까지 30개국 및 4개의 재생에너지 패널 데이터를 실증 분석을 하였다. 그 결과, 외부자금 의존도가 높은 재생에너지 일수록, 선진화된 금융시장에서 더욱 빠르게 발전한다는 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 본 논문은 지속 가능 발전의 주요 요소로 불리는 재생에너지 확산과 금융 시장간의 관계를 규명함으로써, 제조업계 발전과 금융 시장간의 관계에 중점을 두었던 기존 문헌들에게 새로운 관점을 제공하고 있다.
