The crystallization mechanism and catalytic performance of pentasil type zeolite have been investigated.
High silica ZSM-5 was synthesized at the atmospheric condition less than 100℃. The initial progress of crystallization could be well observed since that condition provides a very long induction period. The thin platelike lamellae were found as the first solid phase and they were then broken into smaller intermediate particles. The crystallization of high siliceous crystals initially occurred on the surface of them and thereafter aluminum incorporated into the zeolite framework, resulting in further growth of the crystals.
Catalytic performance was investigated through n-pentane cracking reaction performed over HZSM5 and (H, Ni)ZSM5 catalysts. Methane and hydrogen were produced as the primary products over both catalysts, showing that the protolysis and C-H bond cleavage occur at the Bronsted acid catalyst. The reaction activity and aromatic selectivity (especially BTX and $C_9$ aromatics) over (H, Ni)ZSM5 was higher than HZSM5 catalyst. The activity and aromatic yield increased with the amount of Ni ion exchanged in HZSM5 catalyst. It was concluded due to Lewis acid sites. Hydrogen yield was also higher over (H, Ni)ZSM5 catalyst than HZSM5. It was proposed for the reason that the reverse spillover occurs over the reduced Ni atom and that Ni atom acts as the hydrogen acceptor. The reaction networks, the initial selectivities, the optimum performance envelope curves, and the reaction kinetics were studied for both catalysts.
Nickelosilicate was synthesized at the atmospheric condition different to the conventional hydrothermal autoclave system. It was considered that some Ni atoms did not participate in the framework lattice and they existed as nickel oxide. The degree of participation in the framework lattice of nickelosilicate was observed through the catalytic cracking and the hydrocracking reaction of the feed, n-pentane. The images of nickelosilicate crystals, the TG-DTA analysis data, and XRD patterns showed the similar character with ZSM5 zeolite.
