In order to examine the electric response of the ionic polymer gel, five types of ionic gel with different compositions were prepared. The degree of ionization of polyion for each samples has been calculated by means of the swelling equation based on Flory-Huggins model. Sample 4 (HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.1: 0.3, mol) shows the highest ionization magnitude calculated according to the model and sample 3(HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.1: 0.2, mol), sample 2(HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.1: 0.1, mol), sample 5(HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.2: 0.1, mol) and sample 1(HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.1: 0, mol) follow. This tendency agrees well with the fact that sample 3(HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.1: 0.2, mol) and sample 4(HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.1: 0.3, mol) undergo phase transitions in response to changes in solvent compositions for MeOH+water, acetone+water and EtoH+water systems.
The results of swelling experiment in mixed solvent(MeOH+water, acetone+ water and EtoH+water mixture) are well fitted with Tanaka model. One of the parameters obtained by this work, f(the number of dissociated conuterions per effective chain) was the larger for sample 4 and sample 3 than the others and which agrees roughly with the degree of ionization, i which was calculated by using Flory-Huggins model.
Electric experiments were performed on the three different diameter (0.215, 0.34, 0.5㎝) samples by virtue of putting their samples horizontal or vertical to electrode in the various NaOH concentration (0.02, 0.04, 0.06N) at 5 and 10V. The swelling and shrinking of ionic gel in electric field is mainly controlled by the influence of activity of counter ion. Characteristic swelling and shrinking time increases according to rising the NaOH concentration, for each sample at constant electric voltage. If the other conditions are same, swelling change ratio y(∞) is related with the the polyion quantity for unit volume and characteristic swelling time(τ) is connected with field strength. Sample 3(HSMA: CA: HPVA = 1: 0.1: 0.2, mol) showes better electric behavior judged on high swelling change ratio y(∞). It well agrees with the fact that the degree of ionization for sample 3 calculated previousby is higher than the others. As far as the diameter is concerned, case of 0.34㎝ is best.
